good work eveyone!!!
we met the monthly target in only 4 days.

however just because the target was met doesnt mean we still shouldnt donate.

i remember(correct me if wrong) that the server actually costs about $700pm, so all money raised would be appreciated.

Nowhere near that. I don't know what it is, but the thought that two servers for a relatively outdated game would cost that much is simply

It's the amount of bandwidth that they use, it's crazy
Someone may be able to provide you with the data.

Also my hatred of most rap/hip hop and top 40 crap makes that joke go STRAIGHT over my head

The servers themselves do not cost $700 pm, we donate what we can raise directly to GAU (well Darth does it, but its shows as the BigD community).

This goes towards The Bandwidth PR chews though, which is substantial even for a relatively outdated game............., the TS and brownie points with Richard/Netpres for when we need an upgrade to the servers.

The bandwidth the 2 PR servers use could make Richard alot more $$ if it was used on a commercial basis rather than by us.
But he likes us, and I guess the fact that we get the GAU/Gaming AU name seen by alot of people ;).
Last figure I recall was $500 to $600 area per month.

You mean the same 64 community members that play day in day out?

Btw I donated for my first time today, I still dunno why I haven't done it up until now but you gotta start somewhere I guess. Just had to wait this month to see if I was still gonna get paid. Haven't worked in a month due to the floods. Big shout out to my employer for still paying when we aren't working.

I mean the 1000's of unique players that look at the list of servers in PR everyday, and members and guests that visit the forums......... ? :bulb:

Trolls... I've been doing this for a while now, I am very aware that one persons "Troll" is anothers perfectly legitimate comment, its all about how you interpret the post...
I don't like to class people as trolls, thats generally done for me by the community.:hi:

Fair enough, but lets break this down into economic terms shall we.

1) There are "thousands" of uniques that see the server list after logging on to PR. Of them say 15% are from Australia (generous figure). That's 150 per day see the GamingAU name.

2) This "community" has a core group of about .. 50-60 regular, participating members. Meaning, they are constantly in the servers and post on the forum. These members are not likely to purchase servers or hosting from gamingAU due to at least 2 factors. The first, they already have a local server which they can play on (BigD). Secondly, as they participate in this "community" and from the multiple threads on and about donations, one highly doubts these members have the financial means to purchase hosting or a server. Let's face it, no one here is likely to buy another server or get some hosting when they struggle to donate $10 every 6 months or what have you.

3) That still leaves the guests who visit the forum. If they are anything like the community, they too either don't want or can't afford hosting.

4) Now back to the people viewing the server list. It's not irrational to assume that out of those 150 Australian PR players, 50-60 of them are members of the BigD community. So that leaves 90-100 people who see the GamingAU name everyday. On a pure economic sense, this is an irrational choice. GamingAU is giving up, as you say, $600 per month in fees so that 90-100 PR players may one day become potential customers. That's $6 per person they are paying (called opportunity cost and assuming those 90-100 people play everyday, all month and the number of local players doesn't increase dramatically).

Therefore, I would suggest GamingAU rethink their decision as the current arrangement, on the surface, does not appear to be financially sustainable. However, GamingAU, by providing free hosting, does increase the value of its goodwill as "community" members are grateful for the free hosting (admins more so) and thus are likely to become customers of GamingAU in the future. But this brings one back to point 2, where community members do not have the financial means to purchase said GamingAU services.

But what do I know, I'm just a gutter mouth troll amirite?

Not in that post, but the first one was not constructive and seemingly made to rub people the wrong way (which it obviously did). Certainly someone who can bring forth all those points in a structured manner can see why people would take issue with your word choice the first time?

Also, GAU would be able to say in any prospective business deals. Look we have this awesome PR server that deals with a small niche of a gaming market. We provide this service free (very generously) and have great uptime with our servers.

Just look what these sexy BigD'ians have to say about us...
